Tuesday’s girls’ basketball rewind: No. 1 Cannon School routs No. 16 Providence Day
Cannon School’s girls looked like the No. 1 team in The Observer’s Sweet 16 Tuesday.
Playing 17-time state champion Providence Day at home, Cannon ran away with a 69-50 victory in the CISAA conference rivalry.
It was a rematch of the 2024 N.C. Independent Schools’ 4A state championship game, which Cannon won 62-51.
In Tuesday’s win, Cannon got 16 points from Hina Nakamura and 12 each from Madison Drayton and Jakaila Gaskin.
The Cougars (15-5, 1-0) led 34-19 at halftime and 49-27 after three quarters.
Katelyn Ramsden (12) and Layla CLark (11) led Providence Day (16-7, 2-1 CISAA).

Olive Bigham, Sam Vanderhave, Charlotte Country Day: The Observer’s reigning girls’ athlete of the week, Bigham tied with teammate Vanderhave for a game-high 20 points in a 66-23 CISAA conference win over Charlotte Christian.
Kaitlyn Hensley, South Mecklenburg: Hensley had a season-high 22 points and 10 steals in a 74-18 win over Ballantyne Ridge. It was her first double-double of the season.
Lenise Joseph, North Mecklenburg: In a 94-19 win over Hopewell, Joseph had 32 points, eight rebounds, four steals and four blocks.
MaKenzie Michael, Jade Bell, Rocky River: Michael and Bell combined for 40 points in a 54-19 win at Independence.
Myajah Nix, Central Cabarrus: Nix had 27 points, 11 rebounds in a 47-34 win over county rival Concord.

No. 4 North Mecklenburg 94, Hopewell 19: The Vikings remained a game behind Mallard Creek in the Queen City 3A-4A race, as Lenise Joseph totaled 32 points, eight rebounds, four steals and four blocks. Morgan Knox added 15 points.
No. 6 South Mecklenburg 74, Ballantyne Ridge 18: The host Sabres got 22 points and 10 steals from Kaitlyn Hensley, and ran their SoMeck 4A record to 4-0. They will face Myers Park on Friday in a first-place showdown.
No. 9 North Lincoln 76, Fred T. Foard 40: The host Knights remained unbeaten (5-0) in Western Foothills 3A play.
No. 10 Stuart Cramer 67, Crest 50: Oshauna Holland hit 7-of-12 shots from three-point range and scored 30 points, as the Storm remained tied with Hunter Huss atop the Big South 3A. Lauren Humphrey added 21 for Stuart Cramer.
No. 13 East Lincoln 68, St. Stephens 26: The visiting Mustangs got an early scare, as they led only 15-14 after one quarter. But they outscored St. Stephens 53-12 the rest of the way. Taniyah Thomas (23 points, 10 steals, four assists) and Emma Montanari (19 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists) led the Mustangs in this Western Foothills 3A contest.
Ashbrook 70, Forestview 29: Freshman Jakyra Sadler scored 21 points, and the Green Wave shot 54 percent from the floor in a lopsided Big South 3A victory.
Central Cabarrus 47, Concord 34: Myajah Nix had a huge night, totaling 27 points, 11 rebounds, four steals and four blocks in the Vikings’ South Piedmont 3A triumph.
Charlotte Catholic 70, East Mecklenburg 47: Maggie Kernodle scored 17 points, and Megan Shea added 14, as the Cougars rolled to a Southwestern 4A victory.
Charlotte Country Day 66, Charlotte Christian 23: Olive Bigham and Sam Vanderhave each scored 20 points, as the Buccaneers rode to a one-sided CISAA victory.
Charlotte Latin 46, Covenant Day 42: Charlotte Tune scored 22 points and reached the 1,000-point mark in her Hawks’ career, as Latin held off Covenant Day for a CISAA triumph. Avery Houseton led Covenant Day with 15 points.
Community School of Davidson 65, Christ the King 58: Roxie Gorman scored 17 points, but the Crusaders fell to the Spartans in this Catawba Shores 1A-2A game.
Hunter Huss 58, South Point 55: The visiting Huskies won a narrow Big South 3A decision, as Amya Graham totaled 24 points and 16 rebounds.

Mooresville 53, West Cabarrus 50: Lilly Rumkill scored 23 points as the Blue Devils earned their first Greater Metro 4 4A victory in four tries.
Myers Park 51, Berry Academy 33: Amani Barner’s 15 points helped the Mustangs improve to 5-0 in the SoMeck 4A and set up Friday’s showdown with South Mecklenburg. Parker Breelove and Zahnia Lowe each had 13 for Berry.
Providence 62, Garinger 24: The Panthers’ young lineup produced an easy Southwestern 4A victory, as 6-4 freshman center Emma Fuller had 15 points and 14 rebounds, freshman Anna Fillnow totaled 15 points and five rebounds, and freshman Avery Detenber had seven steals.
Rocky River 54, Independence 19: The Ravens put an emphatic end to their three-game losing streak as freshman Jade Bell and junior MaKenzie Michael scored 20 points each in the Southwestern 4A conference victory. Rocky River improved to 9-5 overall and 2-3 in league play while Independence fell to 0-16, 0-5.
Union Academy 64, Gray Stone Day 20: The host Cardinals improved to 12-0 overall and 3-0 in Yadkin Valley 1A-2A action.
Uwharrie Charter 53, Ambassador Christian 51 (OT): The host Lions led 43-25 after three quarters, but Uwharrie Charter outscored the hosts 21-3 in the fourth quarter, forcing overtime.
