Friday’s girls’ prep basketball rewind: No. 6 South Meck runs down Myers Park

South Mecklenburg is the only girls basketball team to win a SoMeck 4A Conference game against Myers Park in the last three years.

The Sabres did so again Friday with a 46-36 road win that wasn’t as easy as the score might indicate.

Myers Park roared ahead 11-4 in the first quarter and was up 22-11 late in the first half before South Mecklenburg (15-2, 5-0) had a strong closing kick for the victory.

Mustangs coach Barbara Nelson “does a great job coaching her team and they were ready,” South Meck coach Justin Clarke said. “I told the kids they had to match if not exceed the effort Myers Park had. And it was shaky in the beginning but we played better and came back.”

Sabres sophomore guard K.B. Brown had 16 points and junior center Chloe Grant 10 for the Sabres, who also regained the services of junior forward Nykira Arrington (broken right hand) for the first time in eight weeks.

For Myers Park (7-11, 5-1), Chaylan McDaniels had 12 points and Amani Barner 10.

McDaniels had eight in the first half, including a driving layup with 2:25 left in the first half for a 22-11 lead.

South Mecklenburg closed the game on a 35-14 run that included 11 unanswered points in the middle of the game.

Nelson, a veteran coach at Providence Day and Myers Park, has 798 overall high school coaching victories. She trails the N.C. all-time girls high school leader Sandra Langley of SouthWest Edgecombe by nine wins.

Butler girls rout Independence in rivalry game

Butler girls basketball extended its five-game winning streak after a 71-18 win over rival Independence on Friday.

Butler guard Hannah Moss led the way with 20 points and six rebounds, five assists and seven steals. Guard Eshe Muhammad also scored 11 points with three assists.

Similar to most of its wins this season, Butler put the game out of reach early in the first quarter, which the Bulldogs finished with a 21-point lead.

“I’m extremely proud of us,” Moss said after the game. “Every time we play, we want to dominate.”
