Myers Park loses one basketball coach, gains another. Who’s in, and who’s out
For the second time in two years, Myers Park High School will have a new boys’ basketball coach.
First-year coach Andrew Glover informed the team that he was stepping down Monday afternoon. Shortly after that, Mustangs principal Robert Folk announced that former college basketball head coach Dorionte “Dory” Hines would take over the team.
Hines was Glover’s assistant last season on varsity, and was head coach of the Myers Park junior varsity team. Before that, Hines was head coach at Mount Olive University, an NCAA Division II school about 50 miles from Raleigh.
“Coach Hines has extensive experience and a proven track record of success at the collegiate and high school levels,” Folk said, via email. “We strongly believe Coach Hines is the perfect leader to guide our boys’ basketball team towards a successful future.”
A Kinston, N.C., native, Hines started his coaching career as a high school assistant in 2014 at Arendell Parrott Academy in Kinston. In 2017, he became head coach. Hines then took a job at Lander University as an assistant, and later took another assistant job at UNC-Pembroke.
Hines was named head coach at Mount Olive before the 2022-23 season.
Hines was a four-year captain at Mount Olive and is among the school’s all-time leaders in career rebounds and assists.
He was head coach there for one season, going 13-18 and was replaced in late September, prior to the 2023-24 season.
Now, he’ll replace Glover at Myers Park.
Glover, who was hired in May 2024, replaced longtime Mustangs’ coach Scott Taylor last season. After an 0-5 start to the season, Myers Park got hot, reaching the SoMECK conference championship game before running off three straight wins in the N.C. 4A playoffs before losing to Chambers in the 4A state quarterfinals.
Myers Park, which finished 17-13 last season, has had eight straight winning seasons.
In a note to the team Monday, Glover said he had been offered another job and would not be returning at Myers Park next season.
“I have had a dream since I was in middle school of coaching at the highest level possible,” Glover wrote, “and this move is a step in the direction where I aiming ... I will miss my days here at the park and miss being able to pour into your boys on and off the court. They have been such a blessing to me over the past year of my life.”
