Friday’s prep basketball rewind: Opening day from Hoops Challenge, Lakesgiving, more

A third-quarter push helped give Hunter Huss just enough cushion in a tight win over Charlotte Latin at the Charlotte Hoops Challenge on Friday.

The Huskies won, 71-66, mainly thanks to a 28-21 third-quarter advantage.

The teams were close at halftime, with Latin leading by a point. The schools scored just 12 points between them in the second quarter but erupted for 49 points in a fast-paced third quarter.

Huss led by six points after the third and held on for the win in the fourth, led by 28 points from Zaiyir Phillips and 20 from Jaleel Smith.

Friday’s boys’ #BIG5 top performers

RJ Davis, Ridgeview (SC): In a 75-45 win over Lakeside (GA) at the Charlotte Hoops Challenge, Davis had 21 points, 16 rebounds, two blocks, two steals and two assists. He made 10 of 16 field goal attempts.

Columbus Parker, Providence Day: The son of former Johnson C. Smith standout Chris “Green Light” Parker, Columbus Parker came off the bench to score a team-high 23 points in a 74-66 win over Wilson (SC) at the Charlotte Hoops Challenge. Parker had three rebounds and three assists, playing 20 of 32 minutes. Wilson’s Josh Leonard, who also came off the bench, led all scorers with 27 points and nine rebounds.

Zaiyir Phillips, Hunter Huss: Phillips had 28 points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal in a 71-66 win over Charlotte Latin at the Charlotte Hoops Challenge. He made 5 of 9 3-pointers and 9 of 11 free throws.

DJ Rogers, Cannon School: In an 84-51 win over Statesville at the Phenom Lakesgiving event, Rogers had 28 points and two rebounds.

Christian Wilson, Mooresville: Wilson had 20 points, 11 rebounds, three steals and two blocks in a 78-73 win over JM Robinson at the Holden Challenge semifinals at North Mecklenburg.

Friday’s girls’ #BIG5 top performers

Camri Hobbs, Mallard Creek: In a 69-60 win over Ardrey Kell at the Charlotte Hoops Challenge, Hobbs had 20 points on 7 of 10 shooting, to go with two rebounds and two steals. Teammate Kaira Anderson had 15 points, six rebounds, six assists and a steal.

Haley Lenahan, Marvin Ridge: In a 44-36 win over Providence Day at the Charlotte Hoops Challenge, Lenahan had a game-high 15 points, three rebounds and made 3 of 6 3-point attempts.

Alana Jones, East Mecklenburg: Jones had a game-high 22 points in a 62-58 win over Shelby.

Rreanna Johnson, Southeast Alamance: Johnson had a team-high 22 points, nine rebounds, four steals and three assists in a win over North Lincoln at the Phenom Hoops Lakesgiving event.

Kelsey Rhyne and Rayana Minard, Lake Norman: In an 83-58 win over Concord Academy, both players had 22 points. Rhyne had three rebounds and three assists. Minard had three rebounds, two assists and two steals.

(Boys) Ardrey Kell (2-2) vs. Asheville Christian (2-2), in Lakesgiving Classic at Lake Norman, 1:30 p.m. – Asheville Christian’s Jan Bailey is a player to watch. He scored 31 points against Carmel Christian in last weekend’s George Lynch Invitational. Ardrey Kell has been getting balanced scoring. In Tuesday’s 73-61 loss to Weddington, the Knights got 19 points from Braden Suggs, 14 from Matthew Craft, and 13 from Jeremiah Jones.

(Girls) Cannon School (5-2) vs. South Pointe (0-0), in Charlotte Hoops Challenge at Harding, 6 p.m. – It’s the defending NCISAA 4A state champions against the top-rated girls’ team in South Carolina. South Pointe’s Kaleigh Lucas and JaNyia Cunningham are all-staters and major-college recruits. Cannon got 17 points from Jakaila Gaskin and 14 from Jaiden Thompson in Monday’s 107-43 rout of High Point Wesleyan.

(Boys) Charlotte Catholic (2-0) vs. Jordan (1-0), in KR3 Classic at West Charlotte, 5 p.m. – Jordan is coming off a 24-4 season and is led by 6-3 senior guard Gabe Diaz (19.0 ppg, 10.0 rpg). Charlotte Catholic’s fast start has been fueled by Jack Siegel (21.5 ppg, 5.0 rpg) and Joseph Kapsiak (17.5 ppg, 5.5 rpg).

(Boys) Concord Academy (8-0) vs. Lakeside, GA (1-3), in Charlotte Hoops Challenge at Harding, 10:30 a.m. – Lakeside sophomore forward Josh Mosley is averaging 14.7 points a game. He and the Vikings must find a way to stop Concord Academy, which is off to a huge start behind balanced play. All five starters are averaging in double figures, led by Lincoln Raper, who scored 22 points Tuesday in a 92-48 rout of Calvary Day.

(Boys) Cuthbertson (3-1) vs. Blythewood, SC (2-1), in Charlotte Hoops Challenge at Harding, 5:30 p.m. – Blythewood went 23-6 last season and reached South Carolina’s 5A finals. The Bengals face a defensive-minded Cuthbertson squad that is averaging 12 steals a game.

(Girls) Lake Norman (2-0) vs. Terry Sanford (0-1), in Lakesgiving Classic at Lake Norman, 6 p.m. – An interesting aspect for Lake Norman early this season is the strong play of some of its younger athletes, like sophomores Jai’Lynn Wilson (10.5 ppg) and Aaliyah Peace (6/0 rpg). Terry Sanford is coming off a 27-4 season and a loss in the 3A state championship. Senior guard Ameya Brown (18.0 ppg last season) leads the Bulldogs.

(Boys) South Mecklenburg (2-1) vs. Greensboro Day (8-1), in Charlotte Hoops Challenge at Harding, 3 p.m. – South Meck is coming off a 73-64 victory Tuesday over a tough Pinecrest team. Ben Houpt scored 34 points in that contest. Greensboro Day is the defending NCISAA 3A state champion and is led by Micah Gunter, who scored 21 points Tuesday against Greensboro Page and had 29 in a previous contest.
