Wednesday’s rewind: CMS conference tournament championships are set

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ conference tournament championship games are set. The finals will be played Friday.

Here’s what happened in Wednesday’s semifinals:

— In the Greater Charlotte 7A/8A, No. 4 seeded South Meck upset top-seeded West Meck, 54-49. The Sabres will play No. 3 seeded Hough (19-6) in the finals. The Huskies beat Myers Park, 43-37, in a low-scoring semifinal.

— In the Southwestern 7A/8A girls, No. 1 Ardrey Kell (22-3) will play rival Providence (17-7) in the finals. On Wednesday, Ardrey Kell beat Palisades, 61-35, winning its 16th straight game, and Providence beat Ballantyne Ridge, 75-63, behind 31 points from Emma Fuller.

On the boys’ side, No. 1 East Meck (17-9) will play No. 2 Providence (15-9). East Meck beat Palisades in its semifinal, 60-51. Providence held off a late rally to beat Ardrey Kell, 68-65.

— And in the Power Six conference, Mallard Creek’s girls and North Meck will play for a third time. Mallard Creek, the top seed, beat West Charlotte, 69-17. No. 2 North Meck beat Butler, 58-27.

On the boys’ side, No. 1 North Meck will play No. 2 West Charlotte for the second time in a week. The Vikings beat West Charlotte at home Friday to win the outright regular-season title. Both advanced to the tournament final with close wins: North Meck beat Chambers, 54-52, and West Charlotte beat Independence, 66-65.

Wednesday’s #BIG5 top performers

Liam Drayton, Providence: Drayton had 31 points in a 68-65 win over Ardrey Kell in the tournament semifinals.

Emma Fuller, Providence girls: Fuller had a game-high 31 points plus 23 rebounds, eight blocks and five assists in a 75-63 win over Ballantyne Ridge.

Kylie Riggenbach, Lincoln Charter girls: In a 78-29 win over Pine Lake Prep, Riggenbach had a game-high 22 points.

Jack Siegel, Charlotte Catholic: Siegel had a game-high 27 points in an 85-54 win over Piedmont in the Southern Carolina conference semifinals. He didn’t miss a field goal attempt.

My’Asia Young, Mallard Creek girls: In a 69-17 win over West Charlotte in the Meck Power Six semifinals, Young had 18 points, 10 steals and six rebounds.

No. 3 Hough 63, No. 2 Myers Park 47: Tre Ratliff’s 20 points led the Huskies (19-6) to a mild upset of the Mustangs (17-8). Hough outscored Myers Park 20-10 in the fourth quarter. Mack Walters led the Mustangs with 14 points.

No. 1 Mallard Creek 69, No. 5 West Charlotte 17: My’Asia Young scored 18 points, and Kiara Anderson added 14 for the Mavericks (20-5).

No. 2 North Mecklenburg 58, No. 3 Butler 27: The Vikings (23-2) led only 11-6 after one quarter but outscored the Bulldogs (18-11) by a 20-8 margin in the second quarter. Autumn Lacy scored eight points for the Vikings in that surge.

No. 2 Providence 68, No. 3 Ardrey Kell 65: Liam Drayton scored 31 points, as the Panthers (15-9) advanced to the tournament finals. Providence led 54-40 after three quarters, but the Knights (19-7) mounted a furious comeback. Donnie Jones scored a game-high 33 points for the Knights.

No. 1 Ardrey Kell 61, No. 4 Palisades 35: The Knights (22-3) scored their 16th straight victory, as Imani Shelton scored 18 points and Autumn Washington added 16. Jasmyn Ashbounre and Miyah Brown each had 14 points for Palisades (11-13).

No. 2 Providence 75, No. 3 Ballantyne Ridge 63: Emma Fuller had a sensational night, scoring 31 points and grabbing 23 rebounds for the Panthers (17-7). Fuller also had eight blocks and five assists. Avery Detenber added 10 points, seven rebounds and eight assists, as five Providence players scored in double figures.

Natanya Chando led Ballantyne Ridge (13-13) with 12 points.

No. 1 Hickory Ridge 53, No. 4 Central Cabarrus 24: Ma-Kaela Gidney’s 16 points led the Ragin’ Bulls (22-4), who opened a 26-7 lead after the first quarter. Myajah Nix had 11 points for Central Cabarrus (16-10).

No. 3 Cox Mill 67, No. 2 West Cabarrus 49: The Chargers (15-9) pulled a mild upset, behind 26 points from Maddie Alexander. Ryleigh Parks scored 17 for the Wolverines (19-7).

No. 3 Weddington 67, No. 2 Marvin Ridge 63: Matthew Rivlin, who ran in the state indoor track championships Wednesday morning in Winston-Salem, scored a team-high 15 points for Marvin Ridge (20-5) in its upset loss.

No. 1 Lincoln Charter 78, No. 5 Pine Lake Prep 29: The Eagles (20-4) advanced to the tournament finals, and a third meeting this season with Lake Norman Charter. Kylie Riggenbach (22 points) and her sister Taylor (19) paced the Lincoln Charter attack. Sophia Chilton led the Pride (9-17) with 10 points.

No. 2 Lake Norman Charter 58, No. 3 Christ the King 54: Christ the King (17-8) led 25-20 at the half, but the Knights (23-2) rallied. The Crusaders’ Anna Haynes had a game-high 28 points, while Reece Long led Lake Norman Charter with 24.
