Former Appalachian State football player heading home to coach at South Iredell

South Iredell High School has tapped one of its own to be its next football coach.

South Iredell graduate Rydell Cowan will lead the Vikings’ team this fall.

Cowan spent the past four years at Statesville High, where he had four winning seasons and a 32-15 overall record. Last fall, Statesville finished 8-4 and reached the second round of the N.C. 6A state playoffs.

Cowan, who played football at Appalachian State, takes over a South Iredell team that was 3-8 last season and has struggled recently, with one winning season since 2018. But from 2010-18, South Iredell had eight winning seasons and was 6-6 in 2014.
