A Providence Day student is dead one week after Buenos Aires bus crash

A student from Providence Day School has died one week after the student, nine classmates and two faculty members were injured in a bus crash during a school trip to Argentina, according to a news release from the school Sunday.

Multiple news outlets published a separate message that Head of School Glyn Cowlishaw sent to parents on Sunday. In it, he identifies the student who died as Deven Sawyer.

"It has been a week of difficulty and suffering, as we worried about our friends and colleagues so far away in Argentina," he wrote. "Today is one of the darkest days. With the deepest of sorrows, I regret to say that Deven Sawyer has passed away from his injuries. We are overwhelmed with grief and sadness by this devastating news. Together as Chargers, I hope we can face the days and weeks ahead with courage, and find solace and comfort in each other. Love for Deven, love for his family, and love for our community will, in time, help heal our broken hearts. During this challenging time, the care and support of the Sawyer family is our top priority. More information will be forthcoming."

Deven was a rising senior and played tennis, according to Providence Day’s website.

The only other person killed in the June 17 crash was not affiliated with Providence Day, the school said.

As of Saturday, the two faculty members were still in Buenos Aires, but the nine other students had traveled back to Charlotte, the school said.
