Kevin Costner moving to Rock Hill? Nope
Will Hollywood star Kevin Costner be shagging flyballs pitches in Cherry Road Park in Rock Hill?
Stand down, S.C. star watchers. Despite a flurry of reports shared on social media Sunday, including Facebook, there apparently is no truth to the report.
The story is just the latest in a series of hoaxes about Hollywood-tired stars moving to small towns all over the country, including Harrison Ford (Warner Robbins, Ga.), Tom Hanks (Canton, Ohio) and Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie (Berea, Ky.) The reports are often reported by sites with names that look like legitimate news sources, like WCPM 3 News and WLEB 21 News. When you go to the sites and click “about,” most describe themselves as fantasy news.
In the case of Costner and Rock Hill, the report claims to be from CH 18 News. While WCCB Charlotte’s channel 18 is a legitimate news site, there is nothing about Costner on that site. While the CH 18 News site story claims Costner gave an interview about moving to Rock Hill (“I’m not retiring, I’m just looking for a change in life and I think I’ve found that in Rock Hill,”). if you click the “about” section of the site, you’ll find the usual disclaimer: “Channel 18 News is a fantasy news website. Most articles on channel18news.com are satire or pure fantasy.”
According to the hoax-tracking site Snopes.com, the “celebrity moves to small town” stories have been floating around since April, along with a similar hoax, about various celebrities having flat tires in small towns.
