Charlotte Observer high school basketball players of the week
Janelle Bailey, Providence Day girls: UNC signee led her team to upset victories over then No. 2 South Mecklenburg and No. 4 Davidson Day at the Charlotte Hoops Challenge last week. In the two games, Bailey finished with 43 points, 23 rebounds, six steals and three blocks.
Lavar Batts, Concord Robinson: VCU signee had strong senior debut in front of future college coach Will Wade at the Charlotte Hoops Challenge Saturday. He scored a game-high 34 points, had seven rebounds and four assists in a 76-71 loss to Providence Day. He made 5-of-9 three-point attempts.
Donovan Gregory, Carmel Christian: 6-3 sophomore had 36 points, 11 rebounds, six assists in a 76-58 win over Georgia’s Holy Innocents School (0-2) at the Holiday Hoopsgiving tournament in Atlanta Friday. He had 27 in a victory over Lovett (Ga.) Saturday.
Dynasty Heyward, North Mecklenburg girls: Leroy Holden Challenge MVP had 20 points in Saturday’s 64-37 victory over Lake Norman Charter Saturday. Friday, she scored her 1,000th career point in a 57-51 victory over Mooresville. She finished with 24 points. This week, her North Meck team (5-0) debuted in the Observer Sweet 16 poll.
Trey Wertz, Providence Day: Led the No. 4 Chargers to a 76-71 victory over Sweet 16 No. 3 Concord Robinson at the Charlotte Hoops Challenge in a game matching the reigning N.C. Independent Schools 3A state champ (Providence Day) and the N.C. 3A public school champion. Wertz, a 6-5 junior guard, made 5-of-9 3-point attempts, had 30 points, six rebounds and two steals.
