New York Times names this Charlotte-area restaurant one of 50 best in the country
In the Charlotte area, it is already well known that Kindred restaurant in Davidson is one of the best around.
But now, the whole country knows.
The New York Times recently published “The Restaurant List,” which is: “The 50 places in America we are excited about right now.”
In the Carolinas, three restaurants made the list:
- Kindred in Davidson (Milkbread also got a bonus shoutout).;
- Chai Pani in Asheville (Local pro tip: Chai Pani Restaurant Group owns Botiwalla at Optimist Hall);
- and Hannibal’s Soul Kitchen in Charleston.
Here’s what the Times had to say about each:
Kindred
Location: 131 N Main St, Davidson, NC 28036
Neighborhood: Downtown Davidson
Cuisine: New South
Why it made the list: “They hand-batter chicken strips for kids and fry potatoes in duck fat,” Kim Severson writes.
Chai Pani
Location: 22 Battery Park Ave, Asheville, NC 28801
Neighborhood: Near Slope South Brewing District
Cuisine: Indian street food
Why it made the list: “People who know order chaat, kale pakoras and the crispy hyperseasoned okra fries,” Severson writes.
Hannibal’s Soul Kitchen
Location: 16 Blake St, Charleston, SC 29403
Neighborhood: Charleston
Cuisine: Gullah-Geechee
Why it made the list: Severson recommends the crab rice. “Its version is definitive, with local blue-crab meat pan-fried so it’s crispy but still retains bits of soft flesh, piled generously over white rice.”
