Does Krispy Kreme really give away free doughnuts every day? We tested it out

An illuminated Hot Light at Krispy Kreme has always meant customers can bear witness to a steady procession of warm glazed doughnuts drifting down the conveyor belt like edible little miracles.

Could the glowing sign also mean free doughnuts?

One of my colleagues sent me a video of a woman who claimed she received two complimentary doughnuts from a Krispy Kreme in South Florida.

“If there’s two of you in the car, you get two free doughnuts during the Hot Light,” a drive-thru employee told her in the video.

A few clips later, the woman visited another Krispy Kreme location, where employees denied the request entirely.

The conflicting experiences only deepened the mystery. If Krispy Kreme really was quietly handing out free doughnuts, surely the promotion would exist in North Carolina, the chain’s home state. But is it actually an official policy, or just something honored at certain locations?

I decided to investigate.

A hole lot of confusion

Finding a clear answer online felt harder than it should have been.

I started on Krispy Kreme’s website, where a page labeled “Doughnut Deals and Promotions” mostly highlighted seasonal doughnuts and limited-time offers.

Another Krispy Kreme webpage mentioned customers receiving free doughnuts with a purchase, which, strictly speaking, is not really free. And the locations listed on that page were all in Australia.

I also found a Reddit post from a few months ago, where a user wrote they went through the Krispy Kreme drive-thru while the Hot Light was glowing and received four free doughnuts without buying anything. That sounded promising, but anonymous internet claims aren’t exactly reliable.

So I went directly to the source.

I reached out to Krispy Kreme and asked whether customers can receive one free doughnut whenever the Hot Light is on at all locations.

“Krispy Kreme fans throughout North Carolina can enjoy hot doughnuts off the line at Krispy Kreme Hot Light shops during Hot Light hours — 7 to 9 a.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. — and whenever the Hot Light is on,” the company’s spokesperson said.

That seemed to confirm the rumor, at least across North Carolina — but I had to see for myself.

One small bite for journalism

Naturally, there was only one responsible next step: investigative journalism through the drive-thru.

On Wednesday morning, I visited the Krispy Kreme location in south Charlotte on Pineville-Matthews Road to see whether the Hot Light promise actually held up in real life.

The top portion features the classic retro green bowtie-shaped sign with red cursive text reading “Krispy Kreme” above a green bar that reads “DOUGHNUTS” in white capital letters. The sign is mounted on a low, white brick base. Set into the center of the brick base is the circular “Hot Light” neon sign, which is illuminated in bright red and reads “HOT Krispy Kreme ORIGINAL GLAZED NOW”. Green grass sits in the foreground, and a dense green hedge with a few pink flowers lines the background.

It did.

I pulled into the drive-thru around 8:30 a.m., and asked about the free doughnut. Without hesitation, an employee handed one over — no purchase required, no awkward questions asked and no hidden catch lurking at the window.

The doughnut arrived warm enough to nearly melt in my hands, with that familiar glazed sweetness. And it didn’t last long.

I left the drive-thru sticky-fingered and fully satisfied. If the Hot Light is glowing near you, it may be worth pulling over for a free doughnut while the offer still feels like one of fast food’s best-kept secrets.
