$260 million hospital opens outside Charlotte, a first for this Gaston County town

After 130 years of being a town and city, Belmont residents now have a hospital closer to their homes.

CaroMont Health announced the opening of a new 54-bed facility on Wednesday to serve patients in Gaston County and surrounding areas. CaroMont Regional Medical Center-Belmont is the first ever constructed in the city and the second for the hospital system.

It took more than three years to build the hospital, with an estimated construction cost of $260 million.

Location and hours of operation

The 28-acre hospital is located at 1000 CaroMont Parkway in Belmont, adjacent to Belmont Abbey College. Visitors can get to the hospital by taking Exit 27 on Interstate 85.

Belmont’s emergency department is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

What’s at the hospital?

The 275,000-square-foot hospital has five floors with a 240,000-square-foot parking deck.

Along with more than 50 beds and 16 emergency rooms, the hospital has a variety of services for patients and visitors. Some of them include a labor and delivery unit; surgical suite with two operating rooms; imaging and diagnostic services; and five waiting areas with amenities such as a non-denominational chapel and cafeteria.

A vision for Belmont

The hospital is an extension of CaroMont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia. It’s the last part of a 2019 plan to spend more than $400 million on construction and expansion projects in Gaston County.

Belmont’s hospital has specialty clinics and the Belmont Surgery Center offering orthopedic and spinal surgeries.

The construction cost for the campus is not final, but the estimate is $315 million, according to CaroMont.

In 2020, CaroMont Health entered into an agreement with The Southern Benedictine Society and Belmont Abbey College for the land where the campus sits.

“Much like healthcare, education has the unique ability to enrich and support not only the recipient, but also all who surround them,” said CaroMont CEO and president Chris Peek. “A highly regarded institution like Belmont Abbey, focused on the advancement of others, strengthens our community. We are proud to be part of such as historic moment.”
