Frontier Airlines is adding nonstop service from Charlotte, this time to the popular vacation and spring break destination of Cancun, Mexico, starting in March, the low-cost carrier announced Thursday.

Direct service from Charlotte Douglas International Airport to Cancun International Airport will operate three times per week on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays. The route will launch on March 6.

This is the latest route expansion for the airline in Charlotte. A couple of weeks ago, Frontier announced new routes to Detroit and Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Located on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula along the Caribbean Sea, Cancun is known for its white-sand beaches, turquoise waters and many other attractions. Options include exploring historic Mayan ruins in the region, outdoor activities such as scuba diving in coral reefs and natural freshwater sinkholes, and a vibrant nightlife and entertainment scene.

Cancun is also home to the Zona Hotelera, a long strip of luxury resorts, hotels, shopping malls and restaurants.

Frontier continues Charlotte airport expansion

Frontier now offers service to 16 destinations from Charlotte’s airport, including the new Cancun route. The Denver-based airline began service at CLT in 2014.

For the Mardi Gras celebration next year, Frontier is selling tickets for nonstop service between Charlotte and New Orleans. The service will run from Feb. 12 to Feb. 22.

In February, Frontier announced direct flights to Tampa, Florida, with service starting in May. Frontier continued its expansion at CLT with nonstop flights to Boston, Miami, and Cincinnati in the summer.

Last year, Frontier added flights to several U.S. and Caribbean destinations, including New York/LaGuardia, Houston-Bush, Dallas-Fort Worth, Chicago O’Hare, Baltimore-Washington, Buffalo, New York, and San Juan, Puerto Rico.
