Another Charlotte museum earns a partnership with the Smithsonian Institution
The Charlotte Museum of History has added another accolade to its belt.
The museum is now a Smithsonian Affiliate, the second institution to earn that distinction in the city after the Sullenberger Aviation Museum. The history museum also joins over 200 other organizations nationwide, including Raleigh’s North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and Rock Hill’s York County Culture and Heritage Museums.
The nod makes the museum a partner of the Smithsonian Institution, which gives the museum access to traveling exhibitions, artifact loans and educational materials. The connection brings Smithsonian’s national and global history right to Charlotte.
“This partnership opens the door to bring Smithsonian-caliber exhibits and resources to Charlotte while sharing the Queen City’s powerful stories with a national audience,” Terri White, president & CEO of Charlotte Museum of History, said in a news release.
The distinction comes right on time for the museum.
In November, the 1774 Alexander Rock House, which is maintained by the museum, earned a statewide historic designation. It’s one of only 10 other properties in North Carolina to earn that title.
And next year, in honor of America’s 250th birthday, the museum will be hosting its “biggest” exhibit, ‘The American Revolution Experience.’
It’s an interactive experience using a tablet where visitors can learn the role the Carolinas’ played in the American Revolution.
“Our Smithsonian Affiliation is yet another landmark achievement toward our goal of becoming one of the best history museums in the country,” White stated.
