Tina Turner, who died May 24, 2023 at age 83, played Charlotte a number of times over the years, including four times between 1985 and 2000.

Her life story unfolded for theater audiences last December in the jukebox musical “Tina: The Tina Turner Story.”

When she played the Charlotte Coliseum in October 2000, the Observer’s Tonya Jameson beautifully captured the excitement and intensity in her review: “Turner was simply amazing. At 11 p.m. she performed “Proud Mary” with the same amount of passion she displayed when she started the show. Clad in a tight mini-skirt and heels, she shook her hips as hard and as fast as her dancers. That song should be renamed ‘Proud Tina’ because no one will ever sing it the way she does.”

When Turner appeared here in November 1985 at the old Coliseum, she had a surprise guest come on stage for a duet of “Honky Tonk Woman.” Some guy named Mick Jagger.
