Participation in local Juneteenth events has steadily increased since Charlotte’s earliest gatherings in the 70s and 80s.

For 2023, there are more than a dozen ways to celebrate and get involved in our area.

The largest Black Independence Day celebration in North Carolina, founded in Charlotte in 1997, was created by Senegalese businessman Pape S. Ndiaye. He told the Observer in 2021 he wanted to foster unity and community, saying: “My grandmother used to say that when you travel, you need to get the direction. Culture and heritage are the only directions that can help you move forward.”
