Funeral arrangements are set for a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer who died in a wreck involving two semi-trucks on Interstate 85 on Dec. 22.
Officer Mia Goodwin, 33, was killed and three other officers were injured.
Funeral services will be held this Wednesday at noon at First Baptist Church, 301 S. Davidson St., Charlotte, Alexander Funeral Home stated Monday. Visitation is set for between 10 a.m. and noon that day at the church, the funeral home said.
The funeral is open to the public but not the media, according to the funeral home. It said burial will be private.
CMPD said a procession from the Alexander Funeral Home at 1424 Statesville Ave. to the church on South Davidson Street will begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday. The service can be viewed on CMPD Facebook.
Traffic control for staging of police vehicles will start on Statesville Avenue at 7:30 a.m., and the route to the church will be closed at 8:45 a.m. The procession is expected to arrive at First Baptist Church at 9:20 a.m.
On Dec. 22 at 3:39 a.m., two semi-trucks collided with each other on I-85 South in northeast Charlotte, sending both trucks into CMPD vehicles that were assisting State Highway Patrol with traffic for an earlier wreck near W.T. Harris Boulevard.
The next day, police charged one of the truck drivers with involuntary manslaughter.
That driver, Leon Morgan, 50, of High Point, also was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle, failure to reduce speed and felony failure to move over for stopped emergency vehicles. And he was cited for knowingly displaying a fictitious registration plate.
Officer Mia Goodwin
Goodwin joined CMPD in October 2015, and worked in the University City Division in north Charlotte.
She was married to Charlotte firefighter Brenton Goodwin, and had just returned to active duty from maternity leave. Their three children are ages 3, 1 and 4 months.
CMPD officers, Charlotte firefighters, Mecklenburg EMS employees and Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office deputies participated in a processional for Goodwin last Thursday afternoon.
The officials escorted Goodwin from the Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner’s office to Alexander Funeral Home on Statesville Avenue.
Goodwin is believed to be the first CMPD officer killed while stationed at a traffic accident scene since the 1980s, police Chief Johnny Jennings said last week.
The local chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police is accepting donations for her family, and two GoFundMe pages also have been set up for them.
The GoFundMe pages show that nearly $300,000 has been raised for the family, as of Monday afternoon.
