Woman killed in Charlotte homicide was shot by her boyfriend, records say

A woman who arrived at a hospital injured over the weekend and died shortly after was shot in the neck during a fight with her boyfriend over a gun, according to court records.

Serenity Tate, 23, arrived at a Concord hospital on Saturday with her boyfriend, Demontrez Breelove, 26, at 1:24 p.m. and died three hours later , a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police affidavit said.

Breelove spoke to a Concord police sergeant and said a fight over the gun with Tate turned physical. Police said Breelove told the officer the gun went off and struck Tate in the neck at a home in the 14000 block of Whistling Teal Drive in Charlotte. He drove her to the hospital after.

Breelove later told a CMPD detective that the Glock .40 caliber was inside the home, the affidavit said. But Breelove later spoke on the phone with a woman in a CMPD interview room and said the gun was gone.

“While on the phone Demontrez Breelove stated he was done, and the other person advised it was only manslaughter,” the affidavit said.

Breelove was charged with murder and obstructing justice. He is being held with no bond allowed at the Mecklenburg County Jail.
