Man filmed threatening people with knife on Charlotte train arrested Thursday on platform

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police arrested a man who they say was filmed threatening people with a knife on a light rail train June 7, a news release said.

Derek Lamont Hutchinson was charged with six crimes, including going armed to the terror of the people, carrying a concealed weapon, and disorderly conduct.

CMPD did not say where the confrontation took place. Hutchinson was arrested at 10 p.m. on Thursday, June 11, on a Blue Line platform, CMPD said.

A video of the confrontation circulated on social media, and showed a man pointing a knife and arguing with two other people.

“I’ll beat your [expletive],” the man with the knife said. “I will kill you on this [expletive] train.”

The video ended after the knife-wielding man got off the train and sat on a bench on a platform.

Hutchinson is being held on a $40,000 bond, according to court records.

Concerns about light rail safety in Charlotte remain after the August stabbing death of Iryna Zarutska on a light rail train. Data shows that CATS buses, however, are more prone to danger.
