Game Previews

Saturday

(Boys) MLK Showcase, at Carmel Christian – This Phenom Hoops-sponsored event is loaded with talented teams, and any of the games should be good entertainment. But we’ll focus on two of the contests – East Mecklenburg (12-3) vs. Cannon School (19-5) at 4:30 p.m., and Myers Park (12-3) vs. Carmel Christian (20-3) at 7:30 p.m.

East Mecklenburg G Jordon Nevill leads the state in 3-point field goals, although opposing defenses have made it tough on him in recent games. The Eagles have several other good shooters, though, and build their game around distance shooting. Cannon School junior Austin Swartz is another superb shooter, with offers from schools such as N.C. State and Illinois already.

And the nightcap could be stellar. It matches the state’s No. 1 4A team against the state’s No. 1 private school team. Both Myers Park and Carmel Christian play solid defense, so turnovers and offensive rebounding likely will play key roles in determining an outcome. Myers Park’s Elijah Strong and Sadiq White and Carmel Christian’s Jaeden Mustaf and Bryce Cash are among the area’s top rebounders.

(Boys/Girls) MLK Peace Showcase, at Carole Hoefener Center, 615 East 6th Street, Charlotte – Five games are scheduled here. The highlight will be at noon, when East Rutherford (13-2, No. 4 in 2A) faces Mallard Creek (13-2, No. 9 in 4A). East Rutherford is outscoring foes by an average of 68.3-29.9 this season. Sophomore F Elle Stone is scoring 20 points a game for Mallard Creek.

(Girls) MLK Queens Challenge, at United Faith Christian – This is another five-game showcase event. Cannon School, ranked No. 4 among N.C.’s private schools, plays S.C. power Lee Central (9-4) in a 3:30 p.m. contest.
