Pine Lake Prep’s Cole Sheets is The Charlotte Observer’s boys’ high school athlete of the week.
The Pride senior soccer player had the game-winning assist in a 1-0 win at Corvian Charter on Sept. 29.
Sheets also scored on a penalty kick in a 4-3 victory over Community School of Davidson on Oct. 1.
Sheets had eight goals and four assists for Pine Lake Prep in its first 12 matches.
Last week’s finalists
Bennett Ackerman, Gaston Day soccer: The Spartans’ senior scored three goals and had two assists in a 6-2 win over Metrolina Christian on Sept. 30.
Ackerman has 26 goals and 13 assists for a Gaston Day team (11-2) that has won 10 straight games through Monday.
Jonathan Alcauter, Piedmont soccer: The Panthers’ midfielder had a hat trick (three goals) in a 5-4 loss to Monroe on Sept. 30.
The next day, Piedmont tied Sun Valley 1-1.
Alcauter has six goals and two assists for Piedmont (3-8-4) this season.
Christopher Burns, Myers Park cross-country: The Mustangs’ junior ran 15 minutes, 44.36 seconds to finish fifth at the Wendys’ Invitational at McAlpine Creek Park on Oct. 4.
Burns, whose time was nearly 2.5 seconds off his personal-best at the Adidas Challenge in Cary last month, also helped Myers Park to a fourth-place finish at the Wendys’ Invitational.
Dylan Cox, Hough soccer: The Huskies’ senior forward had two goals and two assists in a 13-0 win at West Mecklenburg on Sept. 29.
The next day, Cox had one more goal and two more assists in a 5-1 victory at rival Hopewell.
Cox has 22 goals and 13 assists for Hough (11-3-2) this season.
Brady Johnson, Covenant Day soccer: The Lions’ senior scored four goals in a 6-0 win over Charlotte Christian on Sept. 30.
Johnson added one more goal and one assist in a 4-1 victory at Ambassador Christian on Oct. 2.
Johnson, a Cedarville University (OH) commit, has 15 goals and four assists for Covenant Day (13-2-1) this season.
Garrett Klopp, Lake Norman soccer: The Wildcats’ senior center midfielder had three goals and two assists in two games this week as Lake Norman won 5-0 at North Iredell on Sept. 30 and 3-0 at South Iredell on Oct. 2.
Klopp has six goals and six assists for Lake Norman (12-1-2) this season.
Matthew Perrone, Providence cross-country: The Panthers’ senior ran a 15:59.50 to finish 19th at the Great American Cross Country Festival at Wake Med Soccer Complex in Cary on Oct. 4.
Perrone’s Great American Festival time is just 1.4 seconds off his personal-best, a time he ran last month at the Adidas Challenge on the same course.
Edwin Ramirez, West Lincoln soccer: The Rebels’ junior scored two goals in a 4-3 win over Bessemer City on Sept. 29.
Ramirez also scored three goals and had one assist in a 5-0 win over Stuart Cramer on Oct. 1.
Ramirez has 30 goals and 10 assists for West Lincoln (9-6) this season.
Michael Rivlin, Marvin Ridge cross-country: The Mavericks’ senior ran a personal-best 15:23 to finish in 17th at the Great American Cross Country Festival at Wake Med Soccer Complex in Cary on Oct. 4.
Rivlin’s time was the second fastest in school history.
Rivlin’s efforts also helped the Marvin Ridge cross country team to a 12th-place finish at the same event.
Ayden Torres, West Cabarrus soccer: The Wolverines’ midfielder scored two goals in a 7-1 win over Harding on Sept. 30.
Torres also accounted for both goals, with two assists, in a 2-1 victory over A.L. Brown on Oct. 2.
Torres has 14 goals and 10 assists for a West Cabarrus team (15-1) that has won 14 straight games this season.
