Here are a few standouts on to look for locally starting in October:

  • Fruits: Look for the last of the season’s muscadine grapes, along with apples, blackberries, raspberries, tomatoes, persimmons and pears.
  • Vegetables: You’ll find beets, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, mushrooms, radishes and cucumbers. Leafy greens including kale, spinach, collard greens, and mustard greens are also at their peak.
  • Nuts: Peanuts are in season year-round, and freshly harvested pecans will be in peak season starting around November.
  • What else? Many local markets also feature local meats, farm-fresh eggs, cheeses, honey, baked goods, fresh apple cider and decorative gourds.

On both sides of the aisle, vendor stalls are piled high with fresh produce, including large displays of red tomatoes and various green vegetables. Two people, one using a walker, are in the foreground, and many other shoppers fill the space between the stalls.
