  • Resident Culture Brewing shut down its South End taproom opened in 2021.
  • The closure follows recent shutdowns of Frothy Beard and Weathered Souls taprooms.
  • The Plaza Midwood taproom remains operational as the brewery’s primary location.

Resident Culture Brewing Company announced Monday that its South End taproom is now permanently closed.

Owners Phillip and Amanda McLamb decided to close the brewery to focus on the “long term health of Resident Culture,” according to a news release emailed to CharlotteFive.

“It’s been a good run,” an Instagram post from the brewery reads. “From day one, this space has been about community and creativity – joyful gatherings, unforgettable nights, quiet coffee moments, and the magic of shared connection. We’re endlessly thankful to everyone who showed up, supported us, danced, dined, and raised a glass with us. You made this place more than a location — you made it a memory.”

Resident Culture, which opened the location in 2022 on Bland Street, quickly became a neighborhood staple for its lively atmosphere and combination of craft beer, cocktails and coffee. The South End location was the second taproom for Resident Culture, which got its start in Plaza Midwood in 2017.

Over the past few years, the brewery experimented by adding food from El Toro Bruto, an eatery known for its breakfast tacos that put out dinner as Noche Bruta, before switching its menu to barbecue, CharlotteFive reported. Hector González-Mora, the former El Toro Bruto and Noche Bruta chef, will now be the executive chef at Mi Cariño, a new Mexican eatery opening this fall in South End.

Most recently, the brewery’s food offerings had included chicken supremes using the recipe from Harper’s Restaurant, a nostalgic move for many Charlotteans.

“Onwards and upwards! Your chicken supremes (made the right way) will be missed!,” Charlotte Foodies’ Evan Diamond responded in its Instagram post.

The news of Resident Culture’s closure comes just more than a year after another South End taproom, Frothy Beard Brewing Company, announced its closure, CharlotteFive reported. Weathered Souls, a Texas-based brewery in LoSo, also shut its door last year.

“End of an era,” Jonathan Swope said via Instagram.

“Sending love. Closed doors mean new beginnings & fresh starts,” Babe & Butcher added among the messages.

The brewery’s Plaza Midwood location at 2101 Central Ave., and its 7th Street Market taproom will remain open.

Editor’s note: A previous version included an incorrect opening date for the location.
