Uncle’s food truck ends run in Plaza Midwood after 5 months. ‘Super appreciative’

Uncle’s, a Charlotte favorite known for its Southeast Asian comfort food, has closed after just five months in Plaza Midwood.

Chef and owner Michael Le shared the shocking update Wednesday, July 1, saying the restaurant had “closed silently” last month.

A wide shot of the Uncle’s food trailer, a sleek black mobile kitchen parked in an outdoor space. The trailer features a golden, cursive “Uncle’s” logo and a service window where the staff prepares orders. To the right, a green wooden partition displays a small sign that says “BURIAL GRUB.” Potted plants and herbs sit at the base of the trailer, and a set of metal stairs leads to an upper level in the background, creating a relaxed, urban patio atmosphere.

“When I started the project I was taking on a lot of pressure from last year with life and what not,” he wrote in a farewell message posted to Instagram. “This was fun and new exciting also but at time went on I took on other projects and learned a lot from my major mistakes to when my little wins.”

CharlotteFive reached out to Le for comment on Wednesday and was awaiting a response.

The eatery operated as Hello Uncle and built a strong following through pop-up events around the city. In January, Le opened his first permanent space as Uncle’s in a stationary food truck outside Burial Beer Co.

The menu featured global flavors with a heavy South Asian influence with offerings like charred cabbage with fish sauce, Taiwanese cabbage and chili and khao man gai, a Thai-style chicken and rice dish.

Le’s pick for first timers was the khao man gai tod — or Thai fried chicken.

Two open takeout containers sit on a bright green outdoor table, showcasing a hearty meal. The black container on the left holds Khao Man Gai Tod—crispy fried chicken sliced over a bed of seasoned rice, garnished with fresh cucumber slices, cilantro, and a small cup of savory dipping sauce. The white container on the right is filled with sautéed cabbage, lightly charred and seasoned. The inside of the white lid features a friendly, handwritten “Enjoy :)” message.

In his final send-off, the chef said he was “super appreciative” of the community’s support and hinted at new opportunities in the future.

“I have a few projects in line but as I get back on my feet I’ll be seeing you guys here and there!” Le said. “Be sure to say what’s up!”

This is a developing story and will be updated.
