What to see
Glass artist Marlene Rose will speak at Elder Gallery of Contemporary Art on Feb. 26 from 6-7:30 p.m. Her colorful sandcast glass sculptures typically take the form of symbols and imagery from the common human experience.
“Part of every piece refers to a distant, only partly understood system of symbols that derive their power and strength from the common core we share with our ancestors,” she said. An RSVP to ashley@eldergalleryclt.com is required to attend.
What to do
This year marks the 20th annual Art with Heart, an event benefiting Safe Alliance. The silent and live art auction will take place on Feb. 29 at Elder Gallery of Contemporary Art.
Always a popular event in the creative community, this year’s auction will include original works by Cate Wagoner, Elijah Kell, K. Liles, Alyssa Cox, Charles Waddell, LaDara and others. Since its inception, Art with Heart has raised over $1.9 million for Safe Alliance, an organization helping those impacted by domestic violence and sexual assault. General admission tickets are $100 each.
Where to go
Last year, the Mint Museum Uptown’s series Live at the Mint became a very well attended addition to its existing free Wednesday evening programing. On Feb. 26, the Mint will kick off its 2020 season with a Sphere Series panel discussion titled, “Angels to Anathema: What to Do When Artists Behave Badly.”
Sphere Series, an organization aimed at educating people about art, will host this panel discussion about artists’ questionable choices and how they affect both the work they produce and their legacy.
Panel participants include Emily Nussbaum, the 2016 Pulitzer Prize winner for criticism, and John W. Love, Jr., a Guggenheim Fellow and interdisciplinary artist. The panel will be moderated by Jen Sudul Edwards, chief curator and curator of contemporary art at the Mint Museum.
