Living Black History: A new generation rises in Charlotte

For this year’s Black History Month, we’re exploring Charlotte’s Black history through family legacies, young leaders and more.

From J. Charles Jones to Theresea Elder, Black Charlotteans have played an integral role in civil rights history in the Queen City and beyond.

Decades ago, Black Charlotteans integrated hospitals and schools, fought and won landmark law cases, founded civil rights organizations and protested for equal rights — and their work directly led to the Charlotte we know today.

Some of them are honored with their name on buildings around town or statues on the greenway, but there are others who aren’t as well-known.

How many of Charlotte’s historic Black leaders do you know? Find out by taking our quiz below. (If you can’t see it, click here.)
