Metrolina Christian’s Hadley Martin is The Observer’s girls’ athlete of the week

Metrolina Christian’s Hadley Martin is The Charlotte Observer girls’ high school athlete of the week.

Martin, a cross-country star and a senior, ran a time of 19 minutes, 43.16 seconds to win the Metrolina Athletic conference championship at McAlpine Creek Park on Oct. 13.

Martin’s efforts also helped Metrolina Christian to its 11th straight league title.

Last week’s finalists

Grace Bilmanis, North Lincoln volleyball: The Knights’ junior libero had five digs and 13 service receptions in a 3-0 win over West Iredell on Oct. 13.

The next day, Bilmanis had nine digs and 11 service receptions in a 3-0 win over Maiden.

Bilmanis finished off the week with four digs and 13 more service receptions in a 3-0 loss at Hickory.

Bilmanis has 187 digs, 327 service receptions, 29 assists and three aces for North Lincoln (20-6) this season.

Zaria Drakeford, West Mecklenburg cross-country: The Hawks’ freshman ran a personal-best time of 25 minutes, 20.56 seconds to finish 31st overall in the Greater Charlotte Athletic conference’s junior varsity championship race at McAlpine Creek Park on Oct. 15.

Allie Haynie, Charlotte Latin volleyball: The Hawks’ senior outside hitter had 12 kills and 18 digs in a 3-0 win over Providence Day in the NCISAA 4A state quarterfinals on Oct. 16.

Haynie has 327 kills, 296 digs and 44 aces for Charlotte Latin (28-1) this season.

Millie Johnston, Myers Park field hockey: The Mustangs’ senior forward scored three goals and had two assists in a 10-0 win over Ballantyne Ridge on Oct. 14.

Johnston has nine goals and three assists for the Mustangs this season.

Leena Lohavichan, Providence Day field hockey: The Chargers’ junior scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 overtime win over Covenant Day in the NCISAA quarterfinals on Oct. 16.

Lohavichan has four goals and one assist for Providence Day (12-7-1) this season.

Gia Lowe, Mooresville volleyball: The Blue Devils’ senior had 14 kills, 19 digs and three aces in 3-0 win over Lake Norman on Oct. 14.

The next day, Lowe had 27 kills and 32 digs in a 3-2 loss at North Iredell in a game that decided the North Piedmont conference championship.

Lowe has 398 kills, 391 digs and 49 aces for Mooresville (18-6) this season.

Kate McLaughlin, East Mecklenburg tennis: The Eagles’ sophomore won 6-2, 4-6, 10-5 (tiebreaker) in a 5-4 loss at Northwest Guilford on Oct. 13. She also won 9-7 in doubles in the same match.

McLaughlin also eared the 8A West Regional singles’ runner-up at Providence on Oct. 17.

McLaughlin was also the Southwestern 7A/8A conference singles’ runner-up last week.

Claire Page, Providence cross-country: The Panthers’ junior ran a 19:00 to win the Southwestern 7A/8A conference title by 29 seconds at McAlpine Creek Park on Oct. 15.

Page’s efforts also helped Providence to a runner-up finish.

Isabella Riley, Hickory Ridge cross-country: The Ragin’ Bulls’ sophomore ran a personal-best 19:52.79 to win the Greater Metro Athletic 6A/7A conference title for the second year in a row at Frank Liske Park in Concord on Oct. 16.

Riley, the Greater Metro Athletic conference girls’ runner of the year, also led Hickory Ridge to a conference title.

Chloe Schofield, Providence Day golf: The Chargers’ senior made a birdie putt on the final hole (18th) to shoot a 1-over-par 73 and win the CISAA conference championship at Pine Lake Country Club on Oct. 14. Schofield had five birdies in her round.

Schofield, who also earned CISAA conference player of the year honors with the win, helped Providence Day to the conference title, winnng by five shots the same day.

Sam Vanderhave, Charlotte Country Day cross-country, Sr.: The Buccaneers’ senior ran 19:02.40 to win the CISAA conference championship at McAlpine Creek Park on Oct. 14.

Vanderhave also helped the Charlotte Country Day to a CISAA title, winning by 50 points.
