Dodging Drivers

Cyclists and pedestrians risk their lives navigating Charlotte's roadways. What's the city doing to address it?

A Charlotte Observer analysis found more than 2,000 people were hit by a car from 2018 to 2022. The locations of those crashes reflect a familiar shape: an arch.

Some communities within the arch include Wilkinson Boulevard to the west, Beatties Ford Road to the north and North Tryon Street to the east. They recorded some of the highest numbers of severe injuries and fatalities.

They’re also where Charlotte has plotted a majority of its pedestrian- and bicycle-oriented infrastructure improvements.

The following video will show five of the hot spots, within and beyond the crescent, where people were hit and killed along busy thoroughfares in the past five years.
