Public won’t see details in former Sycamore co-owner’s child rape case for months
The public won’t be privy to new details in the child rape case against the former Sycamore Brewing co-owner for the next several months, his attorney said.
Two scheduled court dates have been canceled since Justin Brigham, 44, was arrested and charged with nine felonies related to December accusations that he broke into a Stanly County home — 40 miles east of Charlotte — and raped a 13-year-old he met online. On Monday, Superior Court Judge Stephan Futrell held the first hearing since December.
Brigham stayed inside the Stanly County Jail while his attorney, Missy Owen, gave an update: The case is still in discovery, and the next court date is set for July, she said.
That summer hearing will be administrative, as well, meaning it’s meant to give the involved attorneys and judge an update on the case.
Brigham, who co-founded the popular Sycamore Brewing in 2014 with his then-wife, was indicted on all nine charges, including statutory rape, first-degree burglary, and assault causing bodily injury, earlier this month. He has not yet entered a plea.
Sarah Taylor, former co-owner of Sycamore, filed for divorce and sold the business, which has since been renamed Club West, after Brigham was arrested.
